I have a PC at work, and for the past several mornings, I've been struggling not to succumb to the urge to go all Office Space on it. (It's good to be a gangster.)
It started off innocently enough. Every morning, I get those "Updates are ready for your computer. Click here to install updates" message. Here in the office, it's generally best to let our network administrator handle all these things, so I usually don't pay the messages any attention. And maybe it's me, but it seems as if my computer is getting more insistent by the day. Every morning, I log on, and that's the first thing that greets my still bleary eyes:
"You have new updates!"
Dang, computer, I KNOW. Dial it down a notch, would ya? It's too early in the morning to be that excited. Besides, you tell me that EVERY morning.
So I ignore it. And inevitably, because I ignore it, it keeps nagging me. As I'm shutting down for the day, I get this:
"Would you like to install updates and shut down?"
Um, thanks, but no. Leave me alone already.
But oh, no. Now things have to get ugly.
My computer's like, "Fine, I'll just update your computer when you're not looking!" It tries. It's no good, because I'm just a regular user. I have no administrative privileges on this workstation.
Then it's all, "O HAI...CANNOT INSTALL CUZ YR NOT ADMINZ!" (Because this is the way this PC talks, LOLcats style...in my head, anyway.)
Realizing that I'm only getting down to its level, I can't help but think, "O RLY???" I roll my eyes.
Stumped, it decides to change tactics. "CAN I HAZ AN UPDATE?" I say no.
Not satisfied, it takes matters into its own hands and tries to update on its own when I shut it down.
When I turned my computer on this morning, it brags: "I HAZ UPDATED WHEN U WUZ SLEEPING!"
Too tired to be mature and rational, I'm like, "WHATEV."
Happy that all the incessant messages will now be gone, I get right to work. I've got at least four programs open, typing away. Suddenly, a little progress box pops up, requesting that I shut down so the new updates can take effect. I get two options: Restart Now, and Restart Later. Since I'm in the middle of my work, I click, "Restart Later". What I really mean is "STFU, already". But the message reappears faithfully, every five minutes.
GAH!
Finally, I break down. I give in. I reboot the damn thing.
Computer is all, "K THNX! WINDOWZ FTW!"
So everything is happy again when it starts up. At last. Peace. Now, back to work.
And then, I see it...that stupid little balloon:
"There are new updates ready for your computer!"
