A coworker gave me a package of dark chocolate-covered cacao nibs yesterday. I confess to being entirely ignorant as to what, exactly, a cacao nib actually is. Never mind, I thought...it clearly is derived from the same thing that makes chocolate, so it must be good.

Cup of steaming hot coffee in hand, I prepare to taste these mysterious little treats.

OH. MY. GOODNESS.

They are (for lack of a better word) utterly delicious!

They are nutty and bittersweet and wonderful.

I Googled, and couldn't find the same kind I have exactly, but this description is close:

Cacao nibs

I've never heard of them either. I don't think we even sell any of the kind down here. Oh well I won't miss it if I don't know it, right?

Now that I've heard of them, I've made more of an effort to look for it - and it seems like it's becoming more widely available. Maybe you'll run across some soon! :)

The nibs I've had were naked as they day they were roasted—I imagine they'd be extremely startling to anyone who wasn't accustomed to dark chocolate. But for me, that powerful, unsweetened cocoa flavor and snap-crunchiness is far better than even chocolate-covered espresso beans.

They really are, and considering how much I love espresso beans, that's saying something!

Do you prefer them uncoated?

If they are good all on their own, I'd love to try to find some.

I think I prefer chocolate-dunked nibs for snacking. If you have a store that specializes in chocolate, you should ask whether you can try a naked nib. They're worth trying, but they're definitely not for everyone, nor for eating by the handful. More for when you want to wake up your tongue.
